Avenues college admission--how good is it?
My clients who are interested in Avenues The World School are always most interested in knowing how this relatively new, for-profit school is doing with college admission. Since Avenues will just have its first graduating class in 2016, families are concerned whether graduates will be able to be placed at elite colleges. I have always advised my clients that I thought Avenues students would do just fine in college admission, since the school devotes extensive resources to college counseling and many Avenues students have the kind of exceptional international resumes which colleges appreciate.
Well, my advice turned out to be true. One of my former clients, a parent, emailed me today about Avenues college admission:
This is the first graduating class at Avenues and early decision they have already been accepted to Ivy League schools - Harvard, Yale and Univ of Penn.
Parents, look for Avenues to be trumpeting these college admissions stats in their marketing. With this class, Avenues has established itself in New York City. For better or for worse, Avenues college admissions rates will make a big difference in how much today's parents want to send their children to this private school.
Manhattan testers often offer a fee-based service: interpreting your child's IQ test results. Many concerned parents, often first-time parents, eagerly sign up. For example, if a child's IQ test scores are uneven, a nervous mom may want to understand how this could have happened.
Parents worry if their children have deficits. IQ tests like the Stanford Binet, OLSAT, and WPPSI offer the illusion that the test results can clearly define children's IQs, strengths, deficits, and future potential. In fact, four-year-olds are tempermental and subject to whim and fatigue. IQ tests measure much less than what they are supposed to, as evidenced by how coachable they are and how many children who bomb preschool IQ tests go on to very successful academic careers.
For these reasons, I think you should think very carefully about your objectives in going back to testers for IQ test feedback. If your child is performing well in nursery school and you have achieved your objectives for kindergarten admission, there is absolutely no reason to linger on the IQ test results. Your energy can much better be spent looking toward future goals.
If your child does have clear signs of social skills, fine motor skills, language skills, or other deficits, I would consult Toby Glick of ParentConfidante (646-300-1881 ortoby(at)parentconfidante.com). Toby looks at the whole picture: how your child is performing in school, with friends, and with you in your home. She is sensible and cautious in the advice she gives, never prescribing unnecessary and unproductive remediation.
Getting a perfect SAT Essay score is easy. But if you want to do it, you need to understand one thing:
The SAT Essay has NOTHING to do with good writing. Getting a perfect score on the SAT Essay is all about understanding the proper formula and then sticking with it - nothing more and nothing less.
In my years as a teacher, I've never met a student incapable of getting a perfect score. It doesn't matter whether you're a "good writer" or a "bad writer" - that's meaningless. All that matters is this: do you know how to please the essay graders?

As I told Hollander in a phone call, given that demand for top school slots outstrips supply, I am not surprised that tuition bills are rising. A client once said to me, "I wish that the tuition was $100,000 a year so fewer people would apply." A school like Dalton, Trinity, or Riverdale can name any price and many parents will gladly pay it. Given this market, there is little incentive for schools to keep down their fees.
